day 1: any noticeable change is met with hostile resistance - the immediate response is “where did my tumblr/facebook/(whatever) go!??! they changed it and now it’s terrible. I don’t want this.”

day 2: “these staffers are trying to ruin what is already working - and why don’t they [insert personal improvement preference here] instead of spending time making things worse?!?”

day 3: the conspiracy theories begin - the man is trying to make it more difficult to communicate effectively, they’re trying to do this and restrict that and it’s all an evil plot etc, or - they will soon be removing accounts that don’t fit with the new regime, or…pick your own flavor of conspiracy subculture.

day 4: less discussion, but there is lingering resentment coupled with a slow descent back into the normal routine, some accounts even accepting certain facets of the change as “maybe ok” or “somewhat acceptable”

day 5: issues of change continue to die down…fewer “threats” to leave and abandon the platform, with a corresponding increase in stoic acceptance

day 6: old-timers start to “remember when we had to make posts with a toothbrush and a pair of scissors? These newcomers don’t know what frontier blog posting was like”

day 7: the new platform is universally accepted (as indicated by a lack of any ongoing dissent), and all is quiet until the next cycle of “improvement”

this seems to be true of any interface really - it’s not restricted to social platforms, or even to a digital interface…
