xplanes: “Last week, before the transit of Halley’s comet across the sun’s disk, balloon ascents were made from several places on the Continent with a view to observing the comet from as great a height as possible, and collecting samples of the air at various altitudes in the hope of obtaining traces of the gases composing the comet’s tail.
