“Last week, before the transit of Halley’s comet across the sun’s disk, balloon ascents were made from several places on the Continent with a view to observing the comet from as great a height as possible, and collecting samples of the air at various altitudes in the hope of obtaining traces of the gases composing the comet’s tail. Both at home and abroad “sounding balloons” were also sent up provided with instruments for testing the effect of the comet’s passage on the atmosphere”
